Every year we get the opportunity to place a donation bin at the entrance of Schreiber Foods Logan Plant. We noticed that one partner at the plant was adding extra donations and when she saw that our bin was insufficient got two cardboard barrels and decorated them herself.
The initially anonymous person was Mercedes, and we decided that we needed to get a sit-down with her to hear her story.
Mercedes is from Chihuahua, Mexico. She served a mission in California where she aided the Spanish speaking community. She told us of how she had started College to be an Elementary School teacher and also studied Computer Science. Later she met her husband and came to the U.S. She now lives in Utah with her son Joshua.
When we asked her why she was so willing to help, Mercedes told us that like many kids in Brazil, she also grew up with little and didn't have a backpack growing up. She also told us about her desire to help the kids in her hometown.
When she saw the donation bin and the pictures of the kids in Brazil, she jumped at the chance to help and hasn't stopped, she has donated over 100 backpacks and has added items not on the list such as shoes and decorating notebooks specifically for the kids!
Mercedes has said she wants to come with us to meet the kids she has been helping so generously and bring her son Joshua as well to see the difference in lifestyle.
